2 injured in 24-40 accident
A 32-year-old Tonganoxie resident was in satisfactory condition Friday evening at a Topeka hospital after a morning accident on U.S. Highway 24-40, about a mile south of Tonganoxie.
About 8:45 a.m. Friday, William Anderson, 52, Lawrence, was driving north on U.S. 24-40 when Kelly Shilling was driving a 1999 Mercury Marquis south on the highway. Shilling crossed the centerline, Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office reports said.
According to witnesses, Anderson attempted to avoid the collision, but was unable to do so and his vehicle collided with Shilling's car. Anderson was taken to an area with non life-threatening injuries. Shilling was taken by air ambulance to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka with serious injuries. On Monday, a hospital official said Shilling remained a patient, but that Shilling requested her not condition status not be released.
Both vehicles came to rest on the east side of the road after suffering extensive damage.
At the time of the collision, there were snow flurries in the area. However, the roadway was not snow covered. Anderson was wearing a seatbelt and Shilling was not upon the arrival of first responders, reports said.
Alcohol and drug use did not appear to be factors in the accident. The crash is still under investigation.
