Blood drive coming to Tonganoxie on Friday
City residents will be rolling up their sleeves and donating blood to benefit local hospital patients during the Tonganoxie Civic Club's annual blood drive, to be held from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at the Tonganoxie VFW Post Home, 910 E. First St. in Tonganoxie.
Community Blood Center, the provider of blood services to local hospitals, will be conducting the drive.
"When individuals normally think of essential community services, they think about the fire and police departments," said Dr. Jay Menitove, executive director and medical director with Community Blood Center. "However, because Community Blood Center is here to meet the needs of local patients, we would hope that individuals in our community would consider us to be just as essential."
Last year, 28,000 individuals in the area needed a blood transfusion. This year, the local needs for blood are expected to rise.
Individuals can help meet those needs by donating at the blood drive, which is being sponsored by the Tonganoxie Civic Club. To make an appointment online, go to www.esavealifenow.org and use sponsor code "tonganoxie." Those interested in donating can also contact Dick Dean at (913) 845-2164.
Participants are asked to bring a photo ID, eat well and drink plenty of fluids before donating.
One donation can help as many as two local hospital patients.
Community Blood Center must collect at least 580 pints of blood every day to meet the needs of the area.
