Ground beef recalled from fort’s commissary
Some ground beef sold this month at Fort Leavenworth's commissary is being voluntarily recalled because of possible E-coli contamination.
Commissary customers who have purchased 85 percent lean ground beef product from May 1 through May 14 at the commissary should stop consuming it. They can return the product or throw it away and bring their receipt to any commissary for a full refund.
The recall is prompted by microbial test results conducted by the Department of Defense Veterinary Food Analysis and Diagnostic Laboratory on beef sent by a supplier to the commissaries involved in the action, said food safety officials with the Defense Commissary Agency, which operates commissaries at military installations.
All total, commissaries at 10 military installations, including Fort Leavenworth, are included in the beef recall.
The commissaries are Great Lakes, Ill.; Fort McCoy, Wis.; Bolling Air Force Base, D.C.; Carlisle Barracks, Pa.; Fort Monmouth, N.J.; Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, N.J.; Naval Submarine Base New London, Conn.; Tobyhanna Army Depot, Pa.; Fort Carson, Colo.; and Fort Leavenworth.
E. coli is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause diarrhea and dehydration. Seniors, the very young, and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to foodborne illness. Cooking ground beef to an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit kills harmful bacteria.
Any consumers concerned about an illness should contact a physician. Anyone diagnosed by a physician as having an illness related to E. coli is also urged to contact state and local public health authorities.
