Our view: Local musicians: Time to join band
Seventy-six trombones probably will not be leading a big parade July 1 in Tonganoxie, but we can be sure there will be a great form of musical expression nonetheless.
"76 Trombones," of course, is a song from the musical "The Music Man." And, although there likely won't be that large of band playing this summer in Tonganoxie, we definitely have our own "Music Man" in Charles Van Middlesworth, known more commonly as Mr. Van.
The Tonganoxie High School band director once again will be leading the Tonganoxie Community Band for its summer concert. This year's concert will be held July 1 at VFW Park.
As always, the band, which is open to all musicians, will practice on Tuesdays throughout June in preparation for the big concert, which normally includes a music lineup of patriotic songs and marches, show tunes and other well-known hits.
Practices are held in the THS band room and the first one will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
The concert has been an annual tradition the last few years, but for it to continue, it requires musicians to return each year - and for new musicians to join in on the fun.
And if more and more people continue to join the band, it may just set off a chain reaction of other community concerts - perhaps during the holiday season or other times of the year - to be held.
So polish up that old trumpet or dust off the tuba you haven't played since high school.
Who knows, maybe there will be 76 trombones in Mr. Van's community band.
