LCDC talks infrastructure at meeting

October 22, 2008

No action was taken during the Oct. 9 meeting of The Leavenworth County Development Corp. because of a lack of quorum.

Discussions by members in attendance centered around the Infrastructure Committee’s top areas of focus for 2008 along with Transportation-Leveraging Investments in Kansas (T-Link) Priorities for Leavenworth County. T-Link, a task force committee, was set up in late August by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in an effort to create a transportation plan that uses new financing methods rather than relying on increased motor fuels and sales taxes like previous 10-year transportation plans.

• One of the Infrastructure Committee’s top priorities is the Missouri-Kansas project with Platte County, Mo., which involves widening Missouri Highway 92 to Interstate 29. Scott Miller, Leavenworth City Manager said using toll roads is one financial option they are looking at to fund the project, but there are still other alternatives to be explored.

• Also near the top of both lists is the regional airport and business park. County Commissioner J.C. Tellefson said all findings from Coffman Associates feasibility study, which is expected to be complete in February, need to be to the Federal Aviation Administration by March when budgeting decisions are made. Tellefson said this is just the first step in probably a 10-year project and there will be plenty of time for public comment in the future.

• The next LCDC meeting will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at the Tonganoxie Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall, 910 E. First St.
