The Chieftains’ 2008 volleyball season came to an end in a Class 4A sub-state semifinal on Saturday afternoon at Eudora.

Tonganoxie High lost a hotly contested, three-game match to the host Cardinals, 25-22, 17-25 and 25-23.

After dropping the first game to Eudora in the semifinal, THS (26-15), the bracket’s No. 2 seed, rallied in the second game and battled back and forth with No. 3 seed EHS in the third game, which was tied on 10 separate occasions. Tied with THS at 23, the Cardinals scored the match’s final two points to eliminate the Chieftains.

In a quarterfinal, Tonganoxie defeated DeSoto (14-22) in two games, 25-21 and 25-20.

Despite the loss, the Chieftains ended their season on an upswing, winning 15 of their final 19 matches.
