McLouth cross country squad finishes season strong
The McLouth High cross country season came to a close on Saturday at a Class 3A regional meet at Riley County.
Bulldogs senior Gelia Gardner was the top finisher for McLouth, running to 28th place in the 4K with a time of 19 minutes, 51 seconds.
Both MHS boys finished in the top 40 as sophomore Derek Wright took 33rd in the 5K, finishing in 20:30, and senior Jarrod Bechard came in 40th at 21:30.
Coach Jamie Noll said she was pleased with the performances of all her runners at the team’s final race.
“The kids’ times were really great for ending the year,” the second-year MHS coach said. “I feel a lot better about this year than I did my first year. We were able to bring home a few medals this season and having that success has helped us look to next year and the possibilities we have with the four returning runners.”
Those four returning runners are freshmen girls Brittany Schuman (43rd, 20:51) and Caroline Overbaugh (44th, 21:01), junior Anne Courtney (63rd, 22:20) and Wright.
Still, Noll said the team’s departing seniors — Bechard and Gardner — would be missed.
“It has been great coaching Jarrod and Gelia the past two years,” Noll said. “They are both hard workers and their leadership was appreciated this year.”
In her third year as coach next season, Noll hopes the program will continue to improve.
“I am excited for next season to see what the returning runners can do, as well as hopefully adding boys and girls so we can have full teams,” she said.
