Kaw Valley League Football Report: Week One
Two of the Kaw Valley League's defending tri-champions were successful on opening night of the 2008 high school football season - but both escaped with one-point victories.
Those teams, Bonner Springs and Lansing, both fended off league opponents. The other of the tri-champions - Perry-Lecompton - dropped a 44-21 non-league decision to perennial Class 4A power Holton.
All that being said, the league's prime-time performer for week one was Lansing senior running back Brenton Smith. He rumbled for 293 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries. Once all the numbers are tabulated statewide, it is likely Smith's yardage total will be the best in Kansas for opening week.
With that being the case, it's worth emphasizing that Lansing still won by just a point. That may speak volumes about how difficult the Kaw Valley League will be in 2008. Piper proved to be a formidable foe, and the Bonner Springs-Bishop Ward one-point thriller - Bonner won on a last-second field goal - emphasized that two of the league's tougher teams from a year ago won't be pushovers this season either.
Basehor-Linwood was one of the KVL's surprise teams in 2007, and despite losing a senior class that included at least five players now on college rosters, the young Bobcats got the job done against Santa Fe Trail and became one of just four schools in the 10-team league to collect a victory this week.
Tonganoxie was the final week one winner as it squeaked by Prairie View, 14-7, with a second-half push.
