Rev. Jamie Bonnema sits outside First Congregational Church of Tonganoxie.

The First Congregational Church of Tonganoxie is celebrating a big birthday. And everyone in the community is welcome to join the celebration.

The church is celebrating its 140th anniversary Sunday with a special service at 10:30 a.m. and then covered dish dinner after the service, likely around noon.

According to Rev. Jamie Bonnema, the church was gathered in 1868 and the church was built in 1873. That church, which is on the National Landmark Registry, continues to be home to services each Sunday at Fourth and Shawnee streets in Tonganoxie.

Bonnema urges all residents to join in the celebration.

“The public is welcome to attend and come celebrate with the congregation,” Bonnema said.

In addition, the church will begin accepting food and monetary donations for hurricane relief at the celebration.
