Skate park vote crucial for youth
The time finally has come.
After years of discussion and proposals, construction of a skate park for Tonganoxie is a reality.
On Monday, the Tonganoxie City Council approved committing funds to the construction of the park, which will be south of the Beatty Field sports complex. The skate park will be on the south side of the high school access road that connects with Main Street.
We applaud the council for investing in the future of our youth.
Although Tonganoxie has numerous opportunities for youths to be active, the skate park adds one more element to that repertoire.
The construction means skaters will have one place especially designed for their craft, rather than searching for spots around town that simply were not designed for skateboarding.
But the project is not just about the city funding the skate park.
Skate park organizers have been raising money for the project and will be asked to contribute as such. Skaters also will be asked to take pride in the park and serve as caretakers.
We're confident they will do their part as well. Throughout the long journey of making the park a reality, the skaters have represented themselves well in meetings and in providing important input in design plans.
We are eager to see the skate park built and used often.
