Kaw Valley League Football Report: Week Four
Bishop Ward put a good scare into Kaw Valley League top dog Lansing for three-plus quarters on Friday night, but a big finish — aided by the defense — allowed the Lions to remain unbeaten.
Lansing wasn’t the lone KVL club to face a difficult task, however. Mill Valley had its hands full with Bonner Springs and the speedy Walker twins. In a game that featured the league’s three fastest players, the score remained low and a pair of interceptions set up both of Mill Valley’s touchdowns.
The league's other unbeaten team — Perry-Lecompton — had a nonconference game on Friday.
Of course, Mill Valley and Perry each have one loss on the season, but it came out of league play. It's also worth reminding that because of the district format involving Class 4A and 5A schools, some KVL schools play an unbalanced league schedule. With that being the case, if a team finishes 5-1 and another is 4-1 in the league, both schools will tie for the KVL title.
At least one team will fall from the ranks of the KVL unbeatens this week. That's unavoidable because Lansing and Perry will square off. Meanwhile, Mill Valley will play its homecoming game against Turner. The Bears — the league's newest school — picked up their first win of the season last week by beating Basehor-Linwood, 20-14.
On another note, one team will pick up its first league win of the season this week when Tonganoxie and Santa Fe Trail meet up.
