Yates takes first at Sycamore Ridge
Tonganoxie places seventh
Freshman Tonganoxie High golfer Colby Yates shot a 76 on Wednesday to finish first at the Mill Valley Invitational at Sycamore Ridge Golf Course in Spring Hill.
Yates pulled off the feat in just his second prep tournament, leading the Chieftains to a seventh-place finish.
Junior Justin Jacobs also placed with a score of 90, putting him 15th overall among the field of golfers.
As a team, THS shot 365 on the course.
The junior varsity squad from St. Thomas Aquinas took first place with a score of 344. St. James Academy was second with 350, and Bonner Springs, who Tonganoxie beat by one stroke for second place the previous week at the Sunflower Classic, was third at 356, just nine strokes ahead of seventh-place THS.
Senior Dalton Lawson fired a 94 for the Chieftains. Mitch DeHoff shot 105 and Preston Putthoff finished with 120 strokes.
Tonganoxie coach Jared Jackson said he was pleased with the performance of his golfers on a difficult course.
“It was a tough tournament field and we had our opportunities to earn team medals,” Jackson said.
The young Yates, his coach said, was eager to get back on the course after shooting 88 in his prep debut at Sunflower Hills Golf Course in Bonner Springs on April 4.
“It was good for Colby to come back strong after he was disappointed in his finish on Saturday,” Jackson said.
After Yates’ individual title, Jackson said THS needs to develop consistent depth to compete for team titles.
On Monday, the Chieftains head to the Leavenworth Country Club for the Lansing Invitational.
