District sponsors Earth Festival

By Staff | Apr 29, 2009

The Leavenworth County Conservation District sponsored an Earth Festival on April 21at the Leavenworth County Fairgrounds. Roughly 70 students from Patton Junior High and the Leavenworth Virtual Center attended. The Earth Awareness Researchers for Tomorrow’s Habitat (EARTH) program is a year-long adventure that middle school students participate in. The district received a grant to sponsor this program and through the grant the district provides the curriculum, the activity kit and supplies to support the program.

At the festival, the students rotated to five different stations. The stations included the Earth Balloon, a stream trailer, wildlife, edible aquifer and gooey garbage. The program is open to middle school students in Leavenworth County.

This is the first year the conservation district had the program and three schools participated. Officials would like to expand the program next year and include more of the middle schools in Leavenworth County.

The conservation district can be contacted at (913) 682-2133 for more information.
