NIcole Tallent comes up for a breath while competing in the individual medley for the Tongie Tidal Waves on Friday at the Lake and Country Club League Championships at Turner Aquatic Center in Kansas City, Kan. The league finals, in which Tongie combined with Turner to finish fourth in the team standings, were the final meet of the Tidal Waves’ inaugural season.

The Tongie Tidal Waves swim team made quite a splash in its inaugural year and team members wanted to share the news with the Tonganoxie City Council.

During Monday night’s city council meeting, Janet Falk, the team’s head coach, and Lee Maughmer, team member, wanted to give the council the 35-person team’s final results.

“Over the season everyone had loads of fun and everyone made a lot of good friends,” Maughmer said. “Everyone on the team was very dedicated. We practiced when it was freezing in the water and we even had a girl that broke her arm and swam with a waterproof cast.”

The team consistently did well during the season and placed fourth out of six teams at the championship meet in June.

Maughmer and Falk thanked all of the parents for volunteering their time to make he season such a success.

“They dedicate their own time to come work with us and make us better,” Falk said.

Falk also wanted to thank the council for allowing them to use the city’s new water park for practices.

Falk said she hoped the city would be able to play host to a meet next year.

“We have an amazing pool and we want to share it because we think we are ready,” Falk said.

Mike Yanez, city administrator, said the city would have to check with its insurance company to make sure it would cover the meet and he would have to coordinate with the teams to make sure the meet does not interfere with the regular pool schedule.

“It really was a phenomenal year.” Falk said. “I’m just tickled pink.”

Street Projects

William Spain said he knows the city is in financial straits, but he wanted to remind the council that the streets in his neighborhood on Seventh and Pleasant streets haven’t been resurfaced in 16 years.

“We’ve heard promises and promises and promises, but it’s just never happened,” Spain said.

The road has been maintained through the years and recently some work has been done to it, but Spain and other residents in the area want to be kept in mind for future projects.

Mayor Mike Vestal said he was sorry the city couldn’t get the project in the 2010 budget, but that it was scheduled for 2011.

“We’re finally doing Second and Cox streets after 15 years so we are getting somewhere,” Vestal said.

In other action the council:

• Approved the payment of $11,769.86 to Kings Construction for work completed on the improvements to the intersection at U.S. Highway 24-40 and Main Street.

• Approved pay request one for $42,435 to Meadows Construction for work completed on the improvements to Second and Cox streets.

• Approved pay request two for $65,049.48 to Meadows Construction for work completed on the improvements to Second and Cox streets.

• Listened to a quarterly report from Steve Jack, executive director of the Leavenworth County Development Corporation.

• Listened to a proposal from Jeffery Arnett, regional manager for TekCollect, for debt collection services for the city.

• Unanimously approved the special event application for Bongo Inc. to allow for taping of the Leavenworth County Fair parade. The filming will be for a Discovery Channel special called Friday Nigh Feud, which will feature a local racecar driver.
