Specific school areas chosen for student pick-ups, drop-offs

Crossing guard Pam Jeannin stops traffic so students and their families can cross Fourth Street as they head to Tonganoxie Elementary School. Tuesday was the first day of school for Tonganoxie elementary and middle school students. Freshmen attended orientation day and will start classes with the rest of their high school mates on Wednesday

With school starting this week in Tonganoxie, there are a few things to remember when taking students to and picking them up from Tonganoxie elementary, middle and high schools.

At the elementary school, parents may pick up students on Shawnee, Second or Fourth Streets, but not on Church Street. Superintendent Kyle Hayden said that street is reserved for the bus lane and should be kept open.

At the middle school, a few changes are being implemented in traffic flow. Bus drop-off and pick-up is being done at the middle school’s main entrance on Washington Street. Parents are to drop off and pick up students at the south entrance to TMS, which is the gymnasium entrance.

Parents can access the designated drop-off and pick-up spot by entering the school from East Street.

At the high school, Hayden reminds parents that they can drop off students anywhere in front of the campus buildings, but should avoid the parking lot area between the east and west campuses as a way to reduce congestion in that space. The parking lot now has just an entrance and an exit, a change from its previous configuration of four access points.

Hayden said he also encourages anyone entering the THS campus to use both U.S. Highway 24-40 entrances when arriving. When leaving, if making a left turn, he recommends using the North Star Drive, or east campus exit because of the traffic light at that intersection.
