KDOT to hold dialogue sessions for study

By Staff Reports - | Feb 18, 2009

The Kansas Department of Transportation will play host to a series of community dialogue sessions to gain public input and insight into the 5-County Regional Transportation Study.

Now under way, the study is challenging stakeholders to rethink transportation strategies to support community values and priorities in Douglas, Johnson, Leavenworth, Miami and Wyandotte counties.

The general public, stakeholders and groups interested in transportation issues are invited to participate in the community dialogue sessions. The sessions will provide an opportunity to share information and for the public to identify what they value about the transportation system.

One community dialogue session will be held in each of the study area’s five counties, including a March session in Leavenworth County. During the sessions, facilitators will lead participants in deliberative dialogues to discuss transportation options and their impacts on communities. Details for each of the community dialogue session are as follows:

The 5-County Regional Transportation Study is a two-phase study designed to assess changing transportation needs within the five-county area. The study’s Phase 1 objective is to compile a comprehensive inventory of transportation needs in the study area. Study participants will identify issues and needs, as well as significant developments and how those developments are impacting the regional transportation system. Phase 1 is expected to be complete by the end of 2009. Phase 2, currently unfunded, will prioritize the identified projects.

This study is a partnership of KDOT, the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC), the Lawrence-Douglas County Metropolitan Planning Organization, the Kansas Turnpike Authority and the study area’s counties and cities.
