Chieftains to open sub-state at home
Class 4A sub-state basketball brackets were released Wednesday and Tonganoxie High’s girls and boys teams will open the postseason at home next week.
The Chieftain boys (11-8) received the No. 2 seed in their bracket and will play host to No. 7 Atchison (3-16) at 7 p.m. on Monday at THS.
The Tonganoxie girls (14-5) are the No. 3 seed in their tournament and will open their postseason at home on Tuesday at 6 p.m. when they play host to No. 6 Hiawatha (6-14).
If the Tonganoxie teams win their opening round contests, they will play later in the week at Perry-Lecompton. The boys would play on Thursday against the winner of No. 3 Holton (11-9) and No. 6 Jeff West (6-13). The girls would play on Friday against No. 2 Basehor-Linwood (14-5) or No. 7 Atchison (5-14). The Bobcats beat Tonganoxie, 51-36, at Basehor in the regular season.
The Basehor-Linwood boys (15-5) were awarded the top seed in their bracket and Holton’s girls (20-0) were the obvious choice for the No. 1 girls spot.
Other teams in the boys bracket are: No. 4 Perry-Lecompton (10-9), No. 5 Hiawatha (8-12) and No. 8 Royal Valley (2-18).
Rounding out the girls field: No. 4 Jeff West (14-6), No. 5 Royal Valley (9-11) and No. 8 Perry-Lecompton (3-16).
The Tonganoxie girls are 2-1 versus the field with a pair of wins against Perry-Lecompton and the BLHS loss this season.
The THS boys, too, have faced only two of their possible sub-state foes, Perry-Lecompton and Basehor-Linwood. The Chieftains are 1-2 in those games with a home win against PLHS and road losses at Basehor and Perry.
