Chieftain boys and girls victorious
Kansas City, Kan. The season is young but after a sweep of Bishop Ward on the road Friday night, the Tonganoxie High girls and boys basketball teams stand undefeated in Kaw Valley League play.

THS led by seven at the half but separated from the Cyclones in the third quarter when the Chieftains outscored the home team, 22-8.
The run was sparked by junior forward Keaton Schaffer. Held to just two points and no field goals in the first half, Schaffer scored 14 points in the third, hitting three threes, the first of which he was fouled on, giving him a rare four-point play.
Senior center Austin Smith was an interior aggressor for THS (3-2 overall, 2-0 KVL), scoring 15 points and grabbing 13 boards.

The Chieftains escaped with a two-point victory despite some late-game drama.
Up 47-45 after a layup by senior Roni Grizzle with 23 seconds remaining, senior Chrissie Jeannin was whistled for a personal foul with 3.4 ticks left while contesting a shot from Ward’s Sarah Epping.
THS coach Randy Kraft called a time out before each of her free throws and Epping missed the first and hit the second. Leading by one, THS (4-1, 2-0) got the ball in bounds to one of their best shooters, junior Andie Jeannin. She missed the first but made the second with 2.3 seconds left and Ward was unable to get off a legit shot for the victory.
Tonganoxie’s seniors were the difference in the game, making play after play. Grizzle had 15 points, 12 rebounds and five steals for the Chieftains. Chrissie Jeannin also accounted for a double-double with 18 points, 10 boards and five helpers.
