In our view: Watching historic moment for U.S.

January 14, 2009

Tuesday will be an historic day. With every inauguration comes a buzz of excitement in Washington, D.C., but this particular one arguably is producing the most buzz.

And why shouldn’t it? The United States never has had a black president. A T-shirt online shows Martin Luther King Jr. and President-elect Barack Obama side by side. On the Martin Luther King portion of the shirt, the words “One day” are displayed. On the side of Barack Obama, the words “Day one.”

It’s a powerful juxtaposition, and one that speaks volumes.

But at the same time, from “day one,” Obama will be expected to lead our country during difficult times — just as many presidents before him.
