The Chieftains led the Pirates at halftime thanks to a 15-0 run to open the second quarter but points weren’t as easy to come by in the second half.
Tonganoxie (4-3 overall, 3-1 Kaw Valley League) scored the first four points of the third quarter when senior Austin Smith put back an offensive board and senior Jace Waters got a steal and a layup, but the Chieftains’ next bucket didn’t come until junior Keaton Schaffer scored on a lay-in to beat the third-quarter horn.
Schaffer led THS with 13 points and secured nine rebounds. Waters knocked down two threes, scored 10 and brought down six rebounds. Smith finished with eight points and led the team with 10 boards.
