De Soto's Aaron Nutterfield and Jamel Townsend converge on Tonganoxie's Brandon Yoder during the Wildcats' 52-30 defeat of the Chieftains on Saturday night.

Already up 13 at the half, De Soto opened the third quarter on a devastating, 19-0 run to cruise to a 52-30 victory and a Tonganoxie Invitational title on the Chieftains’ home floor Saturday night.

Tournament MVP Jamel Townsend scored six of those points for the Wildcats (8-2), Brandan Philbrook chipped in five during the stretch, Brendon Hudson and Dylan Burford each hit a three and Tommy Elmer converted a layup. By the time the Chieftains’ Austin Smith scored on a baseline drive with 2:16 to go in the third to stop the bleeding, the game was out of hand as Tonganoxie trailed, 47-18.

De Soto’s offense was clicking — the Wildcats hit seven threes and only turned the ball over seven times. Hudson led DHS with 13 points in the championship victory. Philbrook and Townsend each had 10.

The Chieftains (6-4) didn’t score double figures in any of the first three quarters, went 12-for-41 from the field and hit five of 10 free throws. Smith, who had 21 points, scored all 10 of Tonganoxie’s fourth-quarter points and was named Most Inspirational player at the 50th annual invite.

The two teams will get a rematch on Tuesday night at De Soto.
