No need for debate: Team takes state title
It’s time to make more room on the championship sign.
At U.S. Highway 24-40 and Washington Street, a sign displays the many state titles in debate that Tonganoxie High School has achieved.
THS debate coach Steve Harrell once again will be busy putting up another board on that sign.
On Saturday at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka, Tonganoxie debaters claimed yet another first-place trophy.
The team of Dalton Lawson and David Powell won first place in Class 4A in two-speaker debate, repeating the same accomplishment from a year ago.
And like 2008, THS also had the second-place team in two-speaker debate.
Matthew Doyle and Brenden Brower-Freeman took home the second-place trophy. However, Tonganoxie didn’t stop there. THS also had two teams finish in fourth place in two-speaker debate: the teams of Douglas Emerson and Ryan Brammer, as well as Nik Irick and Emily Jefferies earned that distinction.
In total, Tonganoxie has earned 12 state titles in debate. All have come under Harrell’s guidance. He came to Tonganoxie 19 years ago and established the debate program a year later.
