Aunt Norie’s Sewing Room

By Eleanor Mckee - | Jun 17, 2009

As I am seemingly, each and every day now, comparing some event or happening of today to those troublesome times of the Great Depression — so very similar to today’s world — I’d like to tell you how my daughter, Glenda, and her husband’s worlds, have turned around.

Yes, only in America, where we the people of this great land can and do so quickly adapt, count our blessings and move on.

You see, they worked hard for years and had retirement all planned. They had just sold their large RV for Winter Texans, the so-called snowbirds who fly south for the winter. They had purchased the large motor home, planning to just travel, see all of this great country, stay as long as they liked and then move on, almost as soon as they hit the road. Gas to $4, and with their huge tank, they finished their first trip to see their daughter in Wisconsin on the loop back home.

Now they have all new plans: They have a mobile home, fenced-in large lot, a smaller RV, a garden, a small chicken house and are on their way home from a trip to see Mom and family, picking up their first chicks on the way home.

I’m sure you’ve seen on the news by now, even in Hollywood, those beautiful front lawns turned into gardens and I’ll bet there are some roosters crowing out there, too.

Glenda and I laughed. Chickens once rode across these prairies on covered wagons. These today are riding in an air-conditioned coach, first class.

We’ve all gone fishing, “No bait on the hook now.” Oh well, just watching the bobber bounce on the water is so relaxing. And that old mother hen clucking to her brood as she takes care of each and every wee one, watching our garden grow.

Hey folks, this is America, safe and sound. There are a lot of bumps in the road right now but they too will smooth out. So pack your worries in a bag, zip it up, toss them up on the top shelf, fix them when you can.

And count your blessings. God love you, bye now.
