Basehor resident charged with soliciting sex acts to undergo competency evaluation
Defense attorney Christopher Joseph requested a competency evaluation Tuesday for his client, a 66-year-old Basehor resident accused of soliciting sexual acts from elementary school children.
Joseph told Leavenworth County District Court Judge Gunnar Sundby at the preliminary hearing he had just met with his client Monday evening and would feel better if this evaluation was completed before the case proceeded any further.
The defendant was arrested June 19 and charged with two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and two counts of aggravated indecent solicitation of a child. Basehor Police Chief Lloyd Martley said the police department conducted an investigation prior to his arrest, and during one interview, he admitted to the accusations. His first court appearance was Friday, June 19, at which the date for the preliminary hearing was scheduled. The same day, he was released from the Leavenworth County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
Prosecuting attorney Mike Jones asked the court Tuesday to raise the defendant’s bond from $50,000 to $100,000 because of the nature of the charges and the defendant’s residential proximity to the alleged victims.
Sundby said he would not grant this request without researching the bond, which was set by a different judge. If a bond hearing were necessary after his review, Sundby said he would schedule it and notify Joseph and Jones.
The defendant will reappear in court for a status hearing at 1 p.m. July 10 after his evaluation has been completed.
It is the Sentinel’s policy to not provide names involved in sexual cases until a person has been convicted.
