Chieftains medal at SMN Relays
Competing at one of their most difficult meets of the season on Friday, Tonganoxie High track athletes still managed to bring home some medals at the Shawnee Mission North Relays.
Competing with 28 other schools, many from Class 6A, the Chieftains won five medals at Shawnee.
THS senior Chrissie Jeannin finished second in the girls javelin with a throw of 133 feet, 2 inches. Teammate Roni Grizzle finished third in the javelin and shot put events. Most of the THS girls did not compete at the relays.
Among Tonganoxie boys, DJ Lindsay was sixth in the 200-meter dash and Jeremy Carlisle placed sixth in the 800-meter run.
Tonganoxie boys coach Phil Williams said a number of his athletes had solid days at Shawnee.
Shawn Roberts threw 149-7 in the javelin but didn’t qualify for the finals. The same was the case for Dylan Scates in the triple jump when he set a new personal record with 41-2 1/2.
The 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams equaled their best times of the season but didn’t place.
The biggest blow to the team, though, came in the pole vault. Sophomore Jake Willis’ pole broke during warm-ups and he injured his hand. Williams said they thought at the time it might have been broken but X-rays were negative. Willis’ status for the Kaw Valley League meet is questionable.
The KVL meet is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Piper in Kansas City, Kan..
