Chamber of Commerce News

By Blake Waters - | May 27, 2009

Our Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce has been working hard to promote Tonganoxie and our Board of Directors wanted to share a few of those efforts with the community.

The St. Patrick’s Day parade experienced one of the largest turnouts in the history of the event with estimations that approximately 500 folks came out to participate. We held a strategic planning meeting facilitated by Will Katz, Regional Director of the University of Kansas Small Business Development Center. Members of the board have represented your chamber at the organizational meetings of the annual Leavenworth County 4-H Livestock Auction and the Kansas Sampler Steering Committee, making certain that Tonganoxie has a strong voice in participating in those efforts. A newly formed networking group has been growing rapidly. We awarded a $500 scholarship to a recent Tonganoxie High School graduate. The Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast was held at VFW Hall with approximately 30 in attendance. Quarterly reports are being presented to the City Council to keep it updated on our activities. More than 650 Friday Flyers are sent out each week announcing our community events via e-mail. Phil Wente of Showpro Audio is working up a presentation for further consideration regarding possible entertainment opportunities for our downtown corridor this summer. We were excited to promote a grand opening ribbon-cutting for The Merge, a new business on Fourth Street, and Vintage Park, an assisted living community.

Upcoming events include the annual Chamber of Commerce State of the State, County, City and Chamber to be held at noon Thursday at VFW Hall. Our networking group will meet again from 6-7 p.m. Thursday, June 4 at VFW Hall. And Tonganoxie Days is just around the corner. It takes place downtown Saturday, June 13.

Board members are Cheryl Hanback, executive director; Margaret Steele, vice president; Marcy Manion, treasurer; Steve Christensen, immediate past president; J.W. Evans; Mike Reischman; Kathy Graveman; Mayor Mike Vestal, on behalf of the City of Tonganoxie; Victoria Rowley, on behalf of the Leavenworth County Development Corporation; and myself, as president.
