KVL football report: Week Five
Tonganoxie sits atop the Kaw Valley League standings as the league’s lone unbeaten team with a 2-0 conference record, but are the Chieftains simply biding their time?
It’s hard to say, because they’ve earned a 4-1 overall record and put up a lot of points. That said, after a break from league play on Friday to play St. James Academy (4-1), the Chieftains enter district play against three KVL opponents that also are near the top of the standings. Basehor-Linwood is 3-1 in the KVL, as is Bishop Ward. Piper is 2-2 but has lethal running quarterback Jasper Sanders that the Chieftains will have to contend with.
Meanwhile, Turner has a chance to position itself as one of the early favorites for at least a share of a league title. The Golden Bears close out KVL action on Friday when they play host to Bonner Springs. Turner is 3-1 in the league and edged perennial power Mill Valley last week, 19-16. Still, beating BSHS will be no easy task. Just ask Piper, which was drubbed by the Braves last week, 29-7.
After a break from league play last week, Basehor will resume its quest for a league crown when it travels to struggling Lansing. After that, however, is a difficult district that threatens to derail the Bobcats’ title hopes.
For some teams, league play is winding down, but for four of the top five teams in the standings (Tonganoxie, Basehor, Bishop Ward, Piper), the wildest action will come in the final three weeks of the regular season when they beat up on each other.
