KVL football report: Week Two

September 17, 2009

Turner and Basehor-Linwood turned in convincing victories in week one of the high school football season, giving the impression that they could be contenders for a Kaw Valley League football championship in 2009.

Turner had an impressive non-league victory over Class 6A opponent Blue Valley North while Basehor shut out league opponent Santa Fe Trail, 49-0.

Both squads proved that their performances on opening night were no fluke when they returned to the field in week two. Turner earned an impressive 47-27 victory over 2008 KVL runner-up Lansing and Basehor used a dynamite first half to pave the way for a 44-21 victory over rival Bonner Springs.

Both Turner and Basehor join Bishop Ward as the league’s lone unbeaten squads after two weeks. Ward has quality victories over Bonner Springs and Perry-Lecompton to its credit.

All three unbeatens have tough games this week, with Turner and Ward squaring off and Basehor traveling to 2008 league champion Mill Valley for what should be one of the Bobcats’ stiffest challenges of the season.

Mill Valley is one of numerous squads that can be considered question marks up to this point. The Jaguars are 0-2 with an week-one loss to Class 6A Blue Valley West and a disappointing week-two defeat to Piper where the Jaguars proved they could drive the ball but were unable to finish possessions the right way.

Lansing also has some work to do as the Lions look to get back on track against a Bonner Springs squad that will be celebrating homecoming this week. Lansing can be successful if it contains hard-nosed BSHS running back Max Barren — but that will be no easy task.

Tonganoxie and Perry-Lecompton — who will play head-to-head in week three — also are among the bigger question marks. THS plays very few league opponents until district play, and the Chieftains threw a game away late against Osawatomie last week. Meanwhile, Perry has given strong efforts in defeats to Holton and Bishop Ward the first two times out while still trying to fill numerous holes from last year’s Class 4A state runner-up squad.
