THS golf 3rd at Mill Valley Invitational
In its second tournament of the season, the Tonganoxie High golf team finished third at the Mill Valley Invitational on Wednesday.
The Chieftains’ team score of 343 trailed team champion St. James Academy (319) and runner-up De Soto (327) at Prairie Highlands Golf Course in Olathe.
THS finished ahead of both those school on its way to a Sunflower Classic team title on March 27.
Tonganoxie coach Jared Jackson said SJA and DHS will be at the Chieftains’ regional in May.
“So our players know they will have to practice at a high level the rest of the year to compete for a spot at the state tournament,” Jackson said.
Chieftains sophomore Colby Yates placed fifth at the Mill Valley Invitational with a score of 81. Senior Mitch DeHoff finished 13th with an 85.
Jackson said Tonganoxie’s golfers expect more out of themselves.
“Overall I thought we had an average day,” Jackson said. “It is a testament to our players’ expectations that we are extremely disappointed with our third-place finish.”
THS returns to the course Monday for the Lansing Invitational at Leavenworth Country Club. Jackson said it should be another good test for the team.
“That will give us another opportunity to see where we stand with a good field that includes perennial (Class) 4A state power Topeka-Hayden,” the coach said.
