Chieftains softball swept at home

By Mirror Staff Reports - | Apr 16, 2010

The Tonganoxie High softball team suffered its first home sweep of the season Thursday at Leavenworth County Fairgrounds.

Previously 3-1 at home, the Chieftains lost both games of a doubleheader to Mill Valley, falling 5-0 and 6-1.

In the first game, THS starting pitcher Nikki Pennington threw 5 and 1/3 innings and allowed only three runs.

“She pitched very well,” said Tonganoxie coach Lee Matzeder, “we just didn’t give her any run support.”

The leading hitters for the Chieftains (3-5) in the 5-0 loss were Brooklyn Kerbaugh (2-for-2), McKenzie Knight (1-for-3 with a triple) and Tiffany Jacobs (1-for-3).

Tiffany Jacobs threw all seven innings of the 6-1 loss and only allowed four earned runs.

Again, hits were an issue. The only THS run came on an inside-the-park home run by Kaitlyn Wolken and the team totaled just four hits. Makayla Leslie went 2-for-3 and Brooklyn Kerbaugh was 1-for-3.

Matzeder noted that his pitchers are doing what he has asked them to — throw strikes. He was happy that they only walked three MVHS batters in 14 innings of work.

THS travels to Turner, in Kansas City, Kan., on Tuesday for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader.
