Letter: Humane Society not anti-farmers

By Staff | Apr 20, 2010

In a column in the April 14 edition of The Mirror, John Schlageck, a communications and public relations professional for Kansas Farm Bureau, incorrectly stated the mission of the Humane Society of the United States.

HSUS is the nation’s largest animal welfare organization. It seems any farmer who watches over and nurtures animals on a farm where the health and welfare of livestock trumps everything else should have a lot in common with the HSUS, whose mission is “Celebrating animals, Confronting cruelty.” HSUS is against CRUELTY, not against farmers or farming. HSUS does not tell anyone not to consume animal products.

People and their health care professionals should determine what diet is best for meeting individual health goals and nutritional requirements. What the HSUS does care about is that animals, even those that are kept or killed for eggs, milk, flesh and fiber, are not treated cruelly.

Readers who want to see for themselves what the HSUS is for and against should visit humanesociety.org. Those who want to see what Kansas Farm Bureau has to say about animal welfare should visit kfb.org. Local Humane Societies are independent organizations, not subordinate units of the Humane Society of the U.S. Local groups may take advantage of a wide variety of training, information, products and resources on various animal care topics available through the HSUS and many other organizations.
