T-Town Grill Off highlights Team Tongie block party

By Shawn Linenberger - | Aug 31, 2010

The Tonganoxie High School parking lot is going to be a hub of activity Saturday, Sept. 11 with a grilling competition, fun run and Team Tongie block party.

Festivities kick off at 10 a.m., when check-in begins for the T-Town Grill Off, sponsored by Cornerstone Family Worship. The check-in will last until noon and there are two categories, beef and chicken.

At 4 p.m. the School 2 School 5K run/walk will begin. The route will run from Tonganoxie Middle School and will go by Tonganoxie Nursing Center before eventually ending at Tonganoxie High School. Recommended donations are $20 for individuals and $10 for each additional family member and includes a T-shirt.

Judging for the cook-off will start at 5 p.m., when the Team Tongie Community Block Party kicks into high gear.

According to Diane Bretthauer with Team Tongie, there will be food, bands, children’s games, inflatable games and performances by the cheerleaders and drill team.

“It’s really going to be like an old-fashioned block party this time,” Bretthauer said. “There will be something for every age group.”

Parents as Teachers will have assorted children’s games, while, like the inaugural block party this past year, there will be a cake auction. In addition, a bonfire also will start at 8:30 p.m. and will kick off homecoming week festivities.

Team Tongie started in March 2009 to raise funds for Tonganoxie families facing serious health issues as a handful of Tonganoxie students were faced with various health setbacks. Team Tongie donations help with expenses ranging from travel and hospital expenses and doctors appointments to medication and everyday expenses. More than $40,000 has been raised and 40 families have been helped to date.
