THS boys fall as zone offense stops clicking
After dissecting Bishop Ward’s zone early on, the Tonganoxie High boys basketball team couldn’t maintain that success in the second half Tuesday and fell to the Cyclones, 59-56.
The Chieftains moved the ball with precision passes that cut apart the extended 2-3 zone in the game’s opening minutes, hitting six of their 11 shot attempts in the first quarter.
They followed that up with a scorching 8-for-11 showing in the second, led by senior point guard Jeremy Carlisle’s four assists, two threes and eight points from senior guard Dylan Scates and seven points from junior center Dane Erickson.
THS (0-2 overall, 0-2 Kaw Valley League) couldn’t operate as smoothly, however, in the second half and the team shot 7-for-23 in the final 16 minutes.
Tonganoxie coach Shawn Phillips said the difference after halftime was a slight defensive alteration made by the Cyclones (1-3, 1-1).
“They made an adjustment. They didn’t come out on the perimeter and guard us a whole lot, so it made it a little bit tougher to get the ball inside to Dane,” Phillips said. “We didn’t knock down shots and it ended up costing us.”
Though Erickson finished with a game-high 27 points, scoring 14 of those in the second half, little else was working for the Chieftains. The sophomore center scored eight of his team’s nine third-quarter points and six of the team’s 12 points in the fourth — Carlisle scored four second-half points and Scates drained a three with 54 seconds remaining.
Though THS entered the fourth with a 44-41 lead, Ward opened the quarter on a 7-0 run and Tonganoxie didn’t score until Carlisle hit a three with 4:33 to go.
Erickson scored inside with 34 seconds left to cut the Cyclones’ advantage to one point but Ward senior guard Evan Burns answered with two free throws and Carlisle missed a potential game-tying three as time expired in the home opener.
The Chieftains play host to Anderson County at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
