Deaths: Gertus H. Jones, 80, Kansas City, Kan., died Nov. 29, 2000; April Lynn Kelly, 28, Bonner Springs, died Nov. 27, 2000, following a traffic accident; Leroy T. Wiley, 70, Leavenworth, died Nov. 29, 2000.

William T. Norman, Jr. will be presented with the National Weather Service’s Length of Service Award for helping his family’s 40-year history of tracking the weather. (The Tonganoxie Cooperative Observer Station was established Feb. 1, 1959, to collect river stage readings, as well as rainfall and snowfall data, in support of hydrology and climate.) On Sept. 16, 1960, William T. Norman became the observer. April 14, 1997, after his death, his son took over the station.

Trina Williams placed in the top five at last week’s finals of the 21st Great Kansas City Sing-Off, held Nov. 27 at the Radisson Hotel in Overland Park. To qualify for the finals, Williams won top prize at karaoke contests held at Kelly’s Restaurant in Basehor.

Births: Addie Connell and Jeff Cullen, Tonganoxie, a son, Adrian Michael Cullen, born Nov.10, 2000; Robbie and Melissa Lewallen, Tonganoxie, a son, John Robert Lewallen, born Nov. 9, 2000; Marcia and Greg Pope, Tonganoxie, a son, Dawson Michael Pope, born Nov. 14, 2000.

William S. and Dorothy J. (Mooney) Fannin will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary with a reception from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds in Lawrence.

25 years ago: Dec. 4, 1985

Deaths: William Henak, Sr., 84, Linwood, died Nov. 27, 1985, in a Lawrence nursing home; Walter Frederich Banks died Nov. 27, 1985, in Brighton, Colo.; Glenn R. Hanson, 78, McLouth, died Dec. 1, 1985; Mrs. Mary Lee Baker, 47, Lawrence, died Dec. 3, 1985; funeral services took place Nov. 29, 1985, in Glendale, Calif., for Ralph Duncanson.

A museum for Tonganoxie has become a reality, announced President John Cass Lenahan Sr., of the Tonganoxie Community Historical Society at the November meeting Nov. 26 at the Mutual Savings Community Room. Mrs. Arthur (Mildred) Young has donated her large historical dairy barn for that purpose. Work will begin this spring on the restoration of this building for a permanent place to display some of the artifacts of our community. (Gordon Harman, Bill Latham and Harold Putthoff were appointed to oversee the improvement of the Fairchild-Knox dairy barn that has been a landmark for many years. A fire in the early ’30s destroyed much of the building, but the original rock wall is still standing.)

Word has been received by family members of the death of Mrs. Uriel (Anna) Harling of Arizona last week. She was a cousin of the late Hans Freienmuth.

50 years ago: Dec. 22, 1960

Deaths: The sympathy of this community is extended to the Gordon Hurlbut family. Both of his parents died in a fire last week in their home on the east coast; Mrs. Annie May Bauer, 83, died Friday afternoon at a care home in Lawrence; Mrs. Bessie Snyder of Linwood, died unexpectedly Friday evening at her home; Carl W. Dohrn, 68, rural Leavenworth, died suddenly Tuesday morning at his home; Mrs. Cora Adele Coleman, Des Moines, Iowa, died Dec. 19, 1960, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mildred Casey, rural Tonganoxie, at the age of 77 years.

Births: Mr. and Mrs. James F. Lay, Rancho Cordova, Calif., a son, James Frank Lay Jr., on Dec. 10, 1960; Mr. and Mrs. Dean Mason of Leavenworth announce the birth of a son, Daniel Brian, born Dec. 14, 1960.

Linwood: Mrs. Fred (Dollie) Reetz died Dec. 15; Mr. W.V. Kline, age 78, died Dec. 19, after a long illness.

Linwood: Mr. and Mrs. Ted Gray announce the birth of a daughter, born Dec.19.

75 years ago: Nov. 28, 1935

Deaths: Robert H. Sechrest, age 68 years, died Tuesday morning; Mrs. Gertrude M. Combs, aged 55 years, died quite suddenly last Friday morning of a heart attack; William, the three-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. James Everheart, was killed Saturday when the truck door on his side came open and he was thrown from the vehicle, a wheel passing over his head.

Linwood: Mr. and Mrs. Chesley Ward announce the birth of a baby girl, born Nov. 22 at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wilson.

Birth: Mr. and Mrs. C.L. Miller of Sublette, a daughter, Verna Marylin, born Nov. 18. Mrs. Miller will be remembered as Miss Dollie Freeman, formerly of Tonganoxie.

Hoge Station: This community was saddened Friday by the sudden death of Mrs. Willis Combs.

Hoge Station: Mr. and Mrs. Henry McGraw are the proud parents of a son.

Pleasant Valley: Fred Smith received word Friday of the death of his brother in Kansas City.

Neely: Mrs. Ray Throop was called to Kansas City to her mother’s bedside. Mrs. Rice died five days later after amputation of her leg.

100 years ago: Dec. 8, 1910

Hawk Hollow school has only four pupils and three of these are from one family. And the district has about as big a population as ever it had.

The friends of Earl Lawrence are pained to hear of the death of his wife November 23rd at Vacaville, California. A few years ago Earl married a girl and lived with her near Vacaville. A boy born a few hours before her death died the 26th.

Alex Turner, the old soldier who went to the Dodge City Home from here last summer, has been stricken blind. He has cataracts on both eyes and cannot see. He may be blind permanently.

Neely: Mrs. McDowell has hurt her hand severely by getting it caught in the cogs of a washing machine.

The Mound school house four miles west of here caught fire Tuesday but the blaze was extinguished before the damage amounted to much. During the noon hour, the teacher Paul Greever, observed smoke coming out of the roof and an examination showed the attic around the chimney to be on fire. School was dismissed until Monday.
