Chieftains victorious on Senior Night
The Tonganoxie High wrestling team dominated Perry-Lecompton on Thursday night, earning a 54-0 dual victory.
Senior Night went off without a hitch for the Tonganoxie High wrestling team Thursday night.
The Chieftains made very quick work of a depleted Perry-Lecompton squad, winning six contested matches — all by pinfall — to defeat the Kaws, 54-0, in the dual.
THS sophomore Anthony Baker (119) started the perfect evening of matches with a victory, which was followed by wins from sophomore Patrick Rachford (145), freshman Thomas Miller (160), senior Jeremie Maus (171), senior Zach Kaighin (189) and freshman Ty Barton (285).
Tonganoxie also picked up forfeit wins for wrestlers Britton Price (135), Ian McClellan (152) and Austen Holloway (215).
The whole dual lasted a whopping nine minutes and 51 seconds as each Chieftains grappler pinned his opponent in the first period.
Before the matches, a special Senior Night ceremony was held to recognize not only Holloway, Kaighin and Maus, but also Jeremy Elliott, who died April 17, 2009, and would have been a senior on this year’s THS squad.
Tonganoxie’s three seniors walked out with Lisa Elliott, Jeremy’s mother, and then carried his wrestling shoes to the center of the mat to retire them.
The THS wrestling team begins its postseason on Saturday at 9 a.m. when the Kaw Valley League Tournament begins at Basehor-Linwood.
