Tonganoxie High senior Keaton Schaffer goes up for a shot against Santa Fe Trail on Friday night. The Chieftains lost at Carbondale, 67-58.

? Defensive breakdowns in the second half cost Tonganoxie High’s boys basketball team a road win Friday night.

The Chieftains led Santa Fe Trail by five at intermission, but gave up multiple easy looks in the paint in the third quarter as the Chargers took momentum and picked up a 67-58 win.

After holding SFT (12-3 overall, 8-1 Kaw Valley League) to 21 first-half points, Tonganoxie gave up 26 in the third and 20 in the fourth, as the Chargers pulled away.

Tonganoxie (8-8, 5-4) led by as many as eight in the second quarter but SFT took the lead less than four minutes into the third quarter.

The Chieftains responded with a three from junior forward Austin Vickers, which gave THS a 36-35 advantage with 4:11 remaining in the quarter.

After the Chargers scored to regain the lead, Tonganoxie senior forward Justin Jacobs hit a pair of free throws to put his team ahead, 38-37, with 3:51 to go.

However, SFT responded with an 8-0 run.

THS didn’t go away but the closest it could get was a one-point deficit when junior point guard Jeremy Carlisle hit Jacobs inside for a score with 5:07 to go.

But the Chargers went on another 8-0 run that sealed the game.

Senior forward Keaton Schaffer led Tonganoxie with 22 points and sophomore center Dane Erickson chipped in 11.

The Chieftains play host to Lansing on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
