Julie A. Whaler, 47, and Richard L. Whaler, 43, had their first appearance Wednesday in Leavenworth County District Court on charges that stem from incidents that allegedly occurred Oct. 17 through 24, 2009, and Feb. 14, 2010, and all involving people younger than 18.

The couple are alleged to have been hosts for underage people where alcoholic beverages were present, as well as furnishing alcohol to someone younger than 18 at their residence in October.

And on Feb. 14, the Whalers allegedly were hosts again to an underage gathering where alcohol was present. They also face two counts of endangering two youths and another count of aggravated endangerment of a youth.

Todd Thompson, Leavenworth County attorney, said that in general, providing alcohol to minors could be endangering, but said he was not allowed to give specifics of the case.

In total, they face six counts, all misdemeanors except for aggravated endangerment, which is a felony.

The Whalers, who remained in jail late Wednesday afternoon, are scheduled to appear again in court on Monday.
