Hanback resigning as chamber director

By Elvyn Jones - | May 18, 2010

Cheryl Hanback will resign as executive director of the Tonganoxie Chamber of Commerce at the end of May.

Hanback said she was resigning the post to focus on her Web page design business, Cheryl Hanback Web and Graphics.

“I’ve really enjoyed working with the chamber, and I’ve gotten a lot out of it,” she said. “I’ve met and worked with a lot of good people.”

Hanback said she would continue as a chamber member and working with the organization.

The chamber office is in a building Hanback owns at 304 West St. Margaret Steele, 2010 chamber president, said the chamber would continue to use the office with Hanback’s resignation.

Steele praised Hanback for getting the chamber back on solid financial ground in difficult economic times and for her work in starting and growing the citywide garage sale, the Downtown Halloween Spooktacular and the monthly newsletter.

“Cheryl Hanback has enthusiastically served as executive director of the Tonganoixe Chamber of Commerce since May 2007, but her involvement and board service began years before that,” she said. “Cheryl was named Tonganoxie Volunteer of the Year in 2005.

“Cheryl was wonderful to work with, and I will certainly miss her involvement.”

The Chamber Board of Directors is evaluating the staffing and work demands of the organization, Steele said. There is no timeline or process for finding a new director. Assistant Barbara Lawrence will continue to run the day-to-day operations at the chamber office.

The chamber provides a stipend of $800 a month to the executive director, which is shared with the assistant.
