Horse dies after being hit by vehicle on U.S. Highway 24-40

By Staff | Nov 23, 2010

A passenger vehicle struck a horse Monday on U.S. Highway 24-40 in Tonganoxie, killing the animal and slowing traffic Monday evening. Tonganoxie police officers were dispatched to the intersection of U.S. 24-40 and Stone Creek Drive at 6:40 p.m., according to Sgt. Steve Hawkins.

The horse got out of a trailer that was a attached to a vehicle on the highway, entered the roadway and was hit, said Hawkins. The department attempted to contact a veterinarian, but none was available and the horse died at the scene. Officers are still investigating how the animal escaped the trailer. No other animals were involved. East- and westbound lanes of the highway were congested but not completely stopped for a little more than an hour.
