Linwood library to close tonight in preparation for move to K-32

October 7, 2010

The Linwood Community Library is expected to move into its new digs soon.

Library director Sue Peavy said Wednesday was the final day of the library being open at 302 Main St. in downtown Linwood. It will close at 7:30 p.m.

The library will still open for regular programs, such as storytime, during that transition period, but the library itself will not be open. Library staff members and volunteers will pack up books and other items Thursday and Friday for the move to the new library at 19649 Linwood Rd. On Saturday, Linwood Lions Club members will then move items to the new location, library director Sue Peavy said.

An open house is tentatively set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, and the new library, it is hoped, will open Oct. 18.

“I know it’s cutting it close,” Peavy said, noting it was always hoped the library could open in October. “We wanted to have the open house before we open.”

Heartland Construction of Lenexa has been doing the renovations to the building, which is the former New Linwood Café. The company bid the project at just less than $126,000.

“We’re very pleased with the construction company,” Peavy said. “They’re doing work on time.”

The existing library has about 1,880 total square feet, while the new library will have 3,500 square feet.

The building was purchased earlier this year for $290,000. The library made a down payment of $35,000, so $255,000 is being financed through First State Bank and Trust during a 10-year period. The lease payments will be made through the library’s current operating budget. In addition, capital and general funds that have accumulated through the years are covering remodeling costs.

The move will mark the end of 30 years for the Linwood Community Library at 302 Main St., as it’s been there since 1980.

Library staff can be still be reached during the transition period at (913) 301-3686.
