Chieftains drop district opener, 55-35
Kaws’ ground attack takes over in second half
Perry Tonganoxie High's inability to stop the run kept the Chieftains from opening district play night with a win Friday.
Junior Perry-Lecompton running back Luke Kellum helped erase a two-score Tonganoxie halftime lead and finished with five rushing touchdowns in a 55-35 Kaws victory.
The difference in the district opener between the two Class 4A programs was the third quarter, when the Kaws outscored THS 22-0.
It began with a 4:29 scoring drive to open the second half, capped by a three-yard touchdown run by junior quarterback Jeremy Immenschuh, and continued with a dominating stretch by Kellum, who had a string of three touchdowns on three straight touches.
The elusive junior back, whose shimmies and shoulder fakes opened large chunks of turf for him, also received some great blocking from PLHS junior tight end Jon Denton.
As if defensive struggles in the third weren't enough to do in the Chieftains (1-6 overall, 0-1 district), their offense suffered three demoralizing plays in the meantime.
Twice Tonganoxie senior quarterback Jeremy Carlisle was stuffed on fourth-and-one and he fumbled the ball on the THS 15-yard line with 24 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Perry-Lecompton (5-2, 1-0) was forced to punt just once all night, on its opening drive.
The Chieftains were able to jump out to a 21-0 lead early in the second quarter with touchdowns runs by Brady Waldeier and Jeremy Carlisle and a TD pass from Carlisle to Dylan Scates.
Their first two scoring drives were set up by superior efforts on special teams. First, THS freshman Shane Levy tackled the Kaws' punter. Later, junior Dallas Jacobs recovered a muffed kickoff return.
Tonganoxie will play host to Basehor-Linwood on Friday.
Perry-Lecompton travels to Jeff West.
