Kansas Speedway rules out IndyCar Series in 2011

By Staff Report - | Sep 10, 2010

Kansas Speedway, which last month announced the addition of another weekend of NASCAR racing in 2011, today confirmed news the track was dropping next year’s Izod IndyCar Series race.

“With the current economic environment, we had to re-evaluate all of our events and are turning our attention to those that make the most financial sense,” Kansas Speedway president Pat Warren said in a news release this morning. “I wish the IZOD IndyCar Series all the best and we’ll continue to have discussions with the series about returning to Kansas Speedway in the future.”

The track has played host to Indy-style races annually since 2001. This year’s Road Runner Turbo Indy 300 in May drew an estimated 45,000 fans. NASCAR races at the 82,000-seat track typically are sold out.

The New York Times reported Friday that the Izod series was dropping races at four tracks owned by International Speedway Corp — Kansas Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., Watkins Glen, N.Y., Chicagoland Speedway and International Speedway in Homestead, Fla.
