High winds, hail blow through area

A line of thunderstorms Sunday evening that blew through northeast Kansas caused some damage in Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties. And two-inch diameter hail was reported in Douglas County.

Eyewitnesses reported a hail core near Kansas Highway 7 and Parallel Parkway shortly before 8 p.m.. Leavenworth County Emergency Management reported a 14-inch diameter tree 30 feet high snapped off from the trunk at 153rd Street in the Briarwood subdivision in Basehor, media reports said. Two small areas near Basehor were without power, according to Westar Energy.

The National Weather Service said the storm was packing winds in excess of 70 mph and was accompanied by damaging hail.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued until 9 p.m. for Douglas, Johnson and Wyandotte counties.

A severe thunderstorm watch remained in effect for much of the area until midnight. Forecasters said rain and thunderstorms will be heavy at times.
