Aunt Norie’s Sewing Room

By Eleanor Mckee - | Dec 20, 2011

? Christmas, that “Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” is here once again. My, how fast time does fly. I had to give up “keeping up” several years ago.

Nothing can take away that true Christmas spirit. Here again, folks, if you feel blue, or down, like it’s not there anymore, just go out and find some kids. The wee ones are so full of it, so trusting, so contagious, especially at this time of the year.

One granddaughter is going to be so surprised and happy this year. She is getting a blue-jeans quilt. It is actually made of her own jeans. This grandmother has managed to spread out that worn, torn, ragged look, the “Blitz” look, so sought-after by the kids today. It has those patches, those pockets, etc.

It is so easy to make one: Just start with a thin weight fabric for the back, spreading it on the floor, or use cutting boards over the bed. Then spread the parts and pieces over the backing, pinning them in place with safety pins. If you start in the center and work outward, it really is not hard to do. If you work from the center outward, they can even be sewn on the sewing machine.

Jean quilts have almost become a family tradition in our clan. When that teenager gets his or her first car, a jean quilt is even expected. My grandson Jason, now a dad himself, and just coming home from his fourth tour of duty, tells us his quilt has gone with him on each of those tours. Oh yes, they can be very warm, rugged, and easy to tote around. Those quilts go on camping trips, picnics, you name it.

Have a very Merry Christmas now, and a great New Year. God bless all of you.
