Linenberger: Drop the phone

By Shawn Linenberger - | Dec 20, 2011

There’s an entertaining photo that’s been circulating through Facebook of a family Christmas card.

All family members, with their heads down, are glued to various electronic devices texting or partaking in other distractions. The father has an index finger in the air as if to say “just a minute.”

A hilarious photo for sure, but it wouldn’t be funny if it weren’t, on some level, accurate.

There’s a possibility that you’ll be at Christmas gatherings later this week and will have the urge to play “Words with Friends” rather than engaging in some words with family.

In addition, it might be far more attractive to play “Angry Birds” than to hear some angry little cousins who might not have gotten what they wanted for Christmas.

Many of us would likely be lost if we didn’t have our smart phones to keep us updated in the world of social media and more — myself included.

However, it’s a time to catch up with family and friends and realize how truly fortunate we are. Though we might be on the verge of a triple word in “Words with Friends” or in need of checking a trending topic on Twitter, just remember that life’s short and these gatherings, in the grand scheme, don’t happen all that often.

A safe and happy holiday season to you and yours.
