Lulls keep THS girls out of win column
The Tonganoxie High girls basketball team's defense kept it in the game Tuesday at Mill Valley, in Shawnee, but some unproductive stretches on offense prevented the Chieftains from winning.
THS scored just one point in the third quarter and went on to lose, 39-34, to the Jaguars.
The one-point quarter epitomized Tonganoxie's troubles, coach Randy Kraft said.
“We went cold for a while and it got away from us in the third,” he said.
The Chieftains (5-9 overall, 2-6 Kaw Valley League) were only down four at the half, and Kraft said it was because of the team's defense.
“We played pretty decent defensively,” he said. “The lulls on offense were where we didn't play so well.”
Though disappointed by the loss, Kraft noted it was a much closer game than when THS played host to MVHS (12-2, 8-1) on Jan. 7 and lost by 24.
“They're a good team,” Kraft said of the Jaguars. “We played well at times, but we still didn't play for 32 minutes.”
At 6 p.m. on Thursday, Tonganoxie plays at Turner, in Kansas City, Kan.
