Tonganoxie boys lose by 15 at MVHS
With post players in foul trouble most of the night, the Tonganoxie High boys basketball team needed to knock down some outside jumpers Tuesday at Mill Valley, in Shawnee.
However, the Chieftains didn't find much perimeter success and lost, 60-45.
Starting THS posts Dane Erickson and Dylan Jacobs spent a lot of time on the bench, a trend that began early on, with Jacobs picking up two fouls in the first two minutes. Erickson picked up his third foul in the second quarter.
The result, Tonganoxie coach Shawn Phillips said, was a five-guard look on the floor for his team most of the night — “It wasn't the best lineup for us,” the coach said.
Compounding matters for the Chieftains (6-8 overall, 1-7 Kaw Valley League) was a cold shooting night from behind the 3-point line, where they went 3-for-18.
“We didn't shoot it particularly well from out there,” Phillips said.
Before Erickson got in foul trouble, he scored 10 of his 18 points in the first quarter. But in the second quarter, the Jaguars (8-7, 7-2) switched from man-to-man defense to a zone and THS struggled to execute.
At 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Tonganoxie plays at Turner, in Kansas City, Kan.
