Owners hope longtime business will reopen

By Shawn Linenberger - | Feb 9, 2011

The Kansas Department of Revenue closed a local business because of unpaid sales taxes on Monday, but the owners said Tuesday they hope to be open again this week.

Shilling Electric, which has been in business since 1946, was closed Monday by the Kansas Department of Revenue for unpaid sales taxes.

However, Phyllis Shilling, who owns the business with her husband, Roger, said Tuesday they were working with the state to open again this week.

“We’re working together to reach an agreement and hopefully be open Wednesday,” she said, referring to today.

The business owed $105,435 in sales tax, according to KDOR and seized bank accounts, on-site cash, business inventory and personal property belonging to the owners. The delinquent sales taxes were from January 2005 to October 2010 and the total amount owed is $105,435.29.

The business was started by Roger’s parents and also has Roger’s nephew, Sean Hancock, working in the family business, which is at 511 E. Fourth St.
