Library serving as warming center
The Tonganoxie Public Library serves as a warming center in Tonganoxie.
Library director Royce Kitts said that while people always are welcome at the library, it also can serve as a place for people who might have insufficient heat in their homes to come in from the bitter cold.
And on really cold days, often when school is canceled, such as Tuesday, the library offers up hot chocolate.
Kitts said the library serves hot chocolate during a Santa Claus event each December and usually has a surplus of hot cocoa.
“When kids aren’t in school, we go ahead and make some for the kids,” Kitts said. “Generally the kids are the ones coming back for seconds.”
He also noted that on days when school is canceled, the library normally has fewer in attendance, but also some new faces.
“On colder days we do tend to see people we don’t normally see,” Kitts said.
The library is open from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Fridays and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturdays.
