Letter: Concerns about fitness club closing in Tonganoxie

January 13, 2011

Editor’s note: A story on page 1 addresses the future of the fitness center in Tonganoxie, as well as information regarding reimbursing and crediting membership fees.

To the editor:

I was surprised and disappointed when I learned Unlimited Fitness Center was closing at the end of December. It's bad enough that I don’t have a place to work out in Tonganoxie, but I still have four months of my membership remaining.

As instructed at the front desk the day the closing was announced, I left my information after being told that I’d be contacted after the first of the year regarding my reimbursement. Today a friend suggested I stop by the Fitness Center and read the note posted on the front door stating that anyone having an open account with Unlimited Fitness needed to call the phone number listed. I did that and became even more disappointed when I discovered the phone number posted doesn't work and neither does the second phone number given in the recording.

I am wondering who I turn to now and if anyone else managed to get a call through.

I paid my membership dues in good faith and would like to discover that my hope in receiving my refund isn't misapplied. I've always been impressed with Mark whenever we've spoken and can't imagine he would post an incorrect number, but I have no way to contact him.

I've contacted as many people as I can in hopes someone has some information about the Fitness Center but kept hearing very vague

Ms. Porter,

I cannot control what numbers are up at the location any more. However, the numbers listed were for the few members that were paying monthly through ABC Financial. The vast majority of my our members had switched to paying monthly at the club. All longer term, pre-paid memberships will be honored by the new owners. I have provided them a list of the seventeen members in your situation; seventeen out of over five hundred memberships.

I wish you had taken the time to contact me personally instead of writing a letter to the editor; my number is in the phone book. Anyway, I hope that the issue has been resolved to your satisfaction, if not please call me and we'll see what we can do to correct it. Thank you for your support over the years. I am truly sorry we were forced to close our doors and end things the way we did.

Mark Padfield
